New Years ‘Training’ Resolution
Happy New Year Everybody! It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I’m back in full effect for 2019 and super excited about my New Years ‘Training’ Resolution. My resolution for 2019 is to drop the CEH and go for the coveted OSCP certification. Out with the old, and in with the new! So, in order to prepare for the exam, I am going to use my FREE online subscriptions to LinkedIn Learning and Safari training.
LinkedIn Learning and Safari Training – FREE!
So, how was I able to snag a free subscription to both LinkedIn Learning and O’reilly Safari, you ask? Well, I just asked them silly! Just kidding. It’s quite simple actually, I jumped into my car, drove down to my local library and signed up for a free library card.
And like magic, I was granted a free subscription to two of the best online training providers on the Internet. OK, not really magic, but almost. Many public libraries have partnered with these online training companies by purchasing educational subscriptions for their patrons to use. Awesome sauce, right? Both providers are great, but what sets Safari apart are their Live Instructor Led trainings and extensive portfolio of I.T. eBooks, which are all free to read online (with a monthly or yearly subscription). LinkedIn Learning’s Lynda.com training consists mainly of prerecorded videos – and is not exclusively technology based content like O’Reilly Safari (although they do have a few soft skills videos in their repertoire).
Another notable difference, is that with LinkedIn Learning you get a certificate upon course completion. Whereas that option is not available for O’Reilly Safari’s Live or prerecorded courses. However, one great thing about the hands-on Live courses is that they are recorded, and made available for viewing 24 hours after the training has ended. This comes in handy, especially if you run into technical difficulties getting the environment setup and fall behind. LinkedIn Learning (or Lynda.com) also has a desktop app that you can use to view courses offline!

I hope that I’ve peeked your curiosity, and have inspired you to check out your local library and see what they have to offer. Your public library may offer LinkedIn Learning, O’reilly Safari or another online provider like Universal Class. Those with .mil email accounts and/or a CAC card (including contractors) should also visit the library at your local military installation – they have awesome online resources. It’s absolutely worth the effort. After all, what’s better than FREE?
